OLM3

Introduction

The OLM3 is an on-line circuit breaker monitoring and supervision system. It is circuit breaker brand and type independent and has provisions to monitor important parameter of any high voltage circuit breaker on the market.

For electrical energy companies the most important object is safe and undisturbed energy distribution, generation and transmission included. There are several components in the links that must have high reliability to ensure that. One of these components is circuit breakers.

Circuit breakers for high voltage are huge mechanical devices with moving parts connected directly in the high voltage power lines. A failure and the energy transmission of that branch may cease. Ripple effects also can cause serious damage on other parts at such incidences.

Modern circuit breakers are safe devices with few moving parts and good margins. But despite rigorously performed production control and recommended periodical maintenance serious malfunctions still happens. A monitoring system subjected on critical parts as well as the overall functionality may be the solution.

Design

The OLM3 on-line circuit breaker monitoring and supervision system is a modular system consisting of two different modules.

For single-pole operation (SPO) (1-pole operation), each individual pole of the circuit breaker is operated by its own operating mechanism. For three-pole operation (TPO), (ganged operation) all three poles are operated by a common operating mechanism. The three poles are mechanically linked together. For SPO circuit breakers the OLM3 system uses one OLM3 base and three OLM3 breaker units and for TPO circuit breakers the OLM3 system uses one OLM3 base and one OLM3 breaker unit.

The OLM3 units are made for mounting on a DIN rail. If possible, the OLM units should be mounted directly in a circuit breaker cabinet. The OLM3 base unit is connected to the OLM3 breaker unit through a bus connector, which means that the OLM3 base unit and a OLM3 breaker unit must be placed next to each other on the same DIN rail. For SPO circuit breaker the second and third OLM breaker unit connects to the first by means of a fiber cable.

The introduction of smart grid and the communication protocol IEC 61850 has made users more focused on integration with existing SCADA systems. OLM3 communicates remotely via an optic fiber cable to permit the user to add signals into his existing data collection system. For those users who prefer, there is also the possibility for interrogation of each unit individually via a web browser interface.
